Eleanor Roosevelt was first lady from 1933-1945. Roosevelt was the US delegate to the UN General Assembly 1945-1952. Roosevelt advocated for the civil rights of African and Asian Americans, and for women in the workplace. As first lady, Roosevelt invited African Americans as guests to the White house and arranged for Marian Anderson to perform both at the White House and Lincoln Memorial. Roosevelt was fully engaged in the New Deal. Roosevelt became the first chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights and, with several others, drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. During WWII, Eleanor chaired the Office of Civilian Defense.
