Sonia Sotomayor, of Puerto Rican descent, grew up in the Bronx, NYC. She completed her undergraduate degree at Princeton University and then went on to Yale Law School. Sotomayor first worked in the NYC District Attorney’s office and then went into private practice. She served on the US District Court for the Southern District of NY under President George W. Bush, and was nominated to the US Court of Appeals by President Clinton. Sotomayor taught at NYU Law and Columbia Law Schools simultaneously. President Obama nominated Sotomayor to the US Supreme Court in 2009. Sotomayor is loosely identified with the liberal sector of the Court. Her upbringing and perspective allows her to identify with concerns for the rights of defendants, reforms and often dissent concerning race, gender, ethnicity, and criminal justice.
