American aviation pioneer, author, and adventurer.

As the first female pilot, Earhart’s solo nonstop transatlantic flight won her the US Distinguished Flying Cross. Her accomplishments allowed her to “advise” in the aeronautics department at Purdue University. Amelia was a member of the National Women’s Party and a supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. Her World flight of 1937 was Earhart’s second attempt due to a mechanical failure on the first attempt. She and Fred Noonan were lost after take off at Lae, New Guinea. Their disappearance is still an unsolved mystery to this day.
