American abolitionist and author of over 30 books.
Uncle Tom’s Cabin written in 1851 was a response to the fugitive slave law of 1850. Harriet aimed to educate the Northern US population on what was going on with slavery in the South and to imbue southern white people with a bit of empathy for those enslaved. The Stowe family sheltered fugitive slaves as part of the “Underground Railroad.” It’s no surprise that Harriet campaigned for women’s rights, particularly those of married women.
